DETROIT, MI – The owner of a home that caught fire and was used as a backdrop in a photo that was posted online, has filed a lawsuit against the Detroit Fire Department.
The photo above the article is at the center of the controversy that has spawned the lawsuit. The attorneys for the homeowner allege that the photo went viral nationally and outraged citizens and Fire professionals around the world.
On Tuesday Deonte Higginbotham, the owner of the destroyed home, through his attorney Steve Haney filed a negligence lawsuit against the City of Detroit, the Detroit Fire Department and all the firefighters that you can see in the attached photo.
“It’s a really horrible look for the city of Detroit,” Haney said. “It is very hard to ignore the racial reality this would not have happened in a different neighborhood” “I thought they would reach out,” Higginbotham said. “They didn’t. Not one.”
A protest is being planned this Thursday, June 18th, 2020 at 4pm in front of Detroit City Hall.
