DETROIT, MI – Joel Eloy Santos-Santos, 23-years-old, of Detroit, has been charged in connection with the non-fatal beating of a 35-year-old woman and her five-year-old son, also of Detroit. Joel Santos and the victim have a child in common.
On June 25th, 2020, at approximately 7:00 a.m., a Taylor police officer was in the area of eastbound I-94 and Monroe, in Taylor, when he saw a female driver exit the freeway while screaming for assistance and pointing to the male passenger in the vehicle.
The officer approached the vehicle and the man forced the woman out of the car before driving away from the scene at a high rate of speed. The officer saw the victim’s obvious injuries and medics arrived and transported her to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries. Due to a language barrier, it became known at the hospital that there were two children in the rear seat of the vehicle, a five-year-old boy and an eight-month old girl.
Joel Santos continued to flee into Detroit at high rates of speed until crashing in the area of the Davison Freeway and eastbound I-96. Officers arrived on the scene and placed the suspect under arrest. The children were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.
It is alleged that Joel Santos beat the victim in the head and body with a tire-iron as she was driving the vehicle through several communities. It is further alleged that, earlier in the morning, that Santos struck the five-year-old boy in the head. Further information will be placed on record in court during the Preliminary Examination.
Joel Santos-Santos has been charged with Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, Felonious Assault, Fleeing and Eluding 4thdegree, DV. He is expected to be arraigned today in 34th District Court in Romulus.
