FILER TOWNSHIP, MI – The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred on Saturday July 4th, 2020, at approximately 3:49 a.m.
The incident occurred on Merkey Road near the intersection at Maple Road in Filer Township.
The crash involved a Jeep Cherokee traveling west bound on Merkey Road when the driver lost control and went off the south side of the roadway. The vehicle rolled over and struck a utility pole. the vehicle continued down an embankment until coming to a final rest.
The driver of the vehicle was a 20-year-old man from Scottville. The passenger, 18-year-old Sydney Jade Riggs, of Manistee, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Sydney Riggs was transported to Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital for medical treatment. Sadly, she did not survive her injuries.
The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Filer Township Fire Department, City of Manistee Police Department, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Tribal Police, the Michigan State Police and North Flight EMS.
Alcohol is believed to have factored into the crash. This incident is still under investigation.
