ROCHESTER HILLS, MI – As the COVID-19 pandemic drags on with no end in sight, we are hearing of more and more people attempting suicide. Unfortunately, some cannot be saved.
The stress of the virus and everyone’s life that has been turned inside out has weighed heavily on those who may not be able to navigate the current hurdles that they are facing in life. This man may possibly be yet another victim of COVID-19.
A 48-year-old Rochester Hills man died after he intentionally slammed his vehicle into a semi-truck in a parking lot at a high rate of speed on Wednesday July 15th, 2020.
At 10:52 p.m. Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with the Rochester Hills Fire Department (RHFD) to an address in the 1400 block of S. Livernois Road, EEI Global parking lot, for an injury crash.
It was reported that a 2000 gray Pontiac Bonneville had been traveling through the parking lot at a high rate of speed when it struck a parked and unoccupied 2004 Kenworth semi-truck.
The driver of the Pontiac had to be extricated from his vehicle by RHFD. Deputies on scene requested the assistance of the OCSO Crash Reconstruction Unit to assist in the investigation.
While being attended to by paramedics from RHFD, the driver of the Pontiac indicated the crash was not an accident, as he was attempting to kill himself. The subject was immediately transported to Troy Beaumont Hospital where again he advised medical staff he had been trying to kill himself.
An Investigator from the Crash Reconstruction Unit, and a Detective responded to the scene to assist in the investigation.
The driver of the Pontiac subsequently died due to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy. Detectives will be continuing the investigation.
