Highly Intoxicated Wrong-way Driver Uninjured after Crashing into FedEx Semi near Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – During the early morning hours of Tuesday July 28th, 2020, just after 2:00am, Michigan State Police Rockford Post Troopers were dispatched to a report of a wrong-way crash on Northbound US-131 near Wealthy St. 

The crash involved an Infinity passenger vehicle traveling Southbound in the Northbound lanes of US-131 which struck a Northbound commercial FedEx semi-truck. 

Following the collision, the tractor trailer caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames, which was extinguished by the Grand Rapids Fire Department.  The driver of the commercial vehicle, a 27-year-old Illinois man, was not injured and was able to exit the vehicle prior to it catching fire.

The vehicle traveling the wrong way was driven by a 27-year-old Grandville woman.  Her Infinity passenger vehicle sustained very heavy damage, but she was not injured.  The driver was arrested for allegedly Operating While Intoxicated – High BAC and lodged at the Kent County Jail.

The freeway was closed for approximately 2 hours as crews worked to remove damaged vehicles and clean up the crash scene.  The freeway was reopened just after 4am.
