CHEBOYGAN, MI – John Spohr, 18-years-old, of Garden City, was killed in a two vehicle crash in Mackinaw Township on Tuesday July 28th, 2020.
Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a fatal crash on US-23 near Freedom Rd on Tuesday afternoon at 6:49pm.
The investigation revealed Jason Nixon, 18-years-old, of Westland, was traveling northbound on US-23. He was the driver of a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer when he lost control of his vehicle and slid sideways into the southbound lane of traffic.
A 2011 Toyota Highlander being driven by Danny Bushman, 36-years-old, of Mackinaw City, collided head on into the passenger side of the Trailblazer causing the Trailblazer to flip on its side and the Highlander to run off the roadway.
John Spohr, 18-years-old, of Garden City, was the front seat passenger in the Trailblazer. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Jason Nixon was transported to McLaren Petoskey by Cheboygan Life Support Systems with serious injuries.
Danny Bushman was the only occupant of the Highlander. He was also transported to McLaren Petoskey by Cheboygan Life Support Systems with serious injuries.
At the time of the crash it was raining. Speed and lack of tread on the tires of the Trailblazer contributed to the crash. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident. Occupants of both vehicles were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Assisting on scene was Cheboygan Life Support Systems, Emmet Life Support, Mackinaw City Fire Department, and Inverness Fire Department.
The accident remains under investigation.
