Westland Man Accidentally Shoots Self while trying to get Phone

FARMINGTON HILLS, MI – On Saturday August 15th, 2020, at approximately 4:20 p.m., Michigan State Police Troopers responded to eastbound I-696, east of Middlebelt Road in Farmington Hills for a shooting.

The investigation found that the subject, a 27-year-old man from Westland, shot himself in the leg with a gun which was either in his pocket or near his leg when he attempted to retrieve his phone. The subject admitted to shooting himself accidentally.

A pistol was located in the passenger compartment of the vehicle, missing the magazine. The magazine was located in the trunk of the car. The subject does not have a concealed pistol license. The subject was listed in good condition and remains at the hospital.

A formal report of the incident will be submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for possible CCW violations.
