Alanson Man Accused of Beating Autistic Person at Campground

CHEBOYGAN COUNTY, MI. On Saturday August 1st, 2020, at approximately 10:40 p.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gaylord Post were dispatched to a report of a physical altercation that occurred at a campground located on M-68 Highway in Ellis Township.

The parties involved were now at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital receiving treatment for their injuries. Further investigation led to the arrest of 41-year-old Michael Allen Griffith of Alanson for First-Degree Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Third Offense.

Michael Griffith and the victim got in a physical altercation at the campground. The victim, who is autistic, sustained significant injuries during the altercation.

The report was sent to the Cheboygan County Prosecutor who authorized one count First Degree Child Abuse and one count Domestic Violence Third Offense. Griffith was arraigned on August 21, 2020 in the 89th District Court in Cheboygan County. His bond was set at $5,000 cash surety. His next scheduled court appearance is on August 27, 2020.
