ALDEN, MI – A 52-year-old Emmet County man was arrested and charged following and investigation where he allegedly stole over $100,000 of his elderly parents money.
The Michigan State Police (MSP) Gaylord Post were contacted in May 2020 to investigate a vulnerable adult embezzlement complaint. The suspect allegedly embezzled money from his parents’ bank accounts. The suspect and his sibling were granted Power of Attorney over their parents’ assets who are in an adult facility. The sibling reported the alleged embezzlement after learning the suspect had opened an unauthorized bank account and was using it for other purposes.
The suspect, 52-year-old Frederick James Mawson of Alden, was interviewed and the victims’ bank records were reviewed. The investigation revealed over $100,000 was used by Mawson for personal reasons not related to the care of his parents. The report was turned over to the Emmet County Prosecutor’s Office.
An arrest warrant was issued for Frederick Mawson. He was arrested and charged with one count of Embezzlement from Vulnerable Adult $100,000 or more, one count Embezzlement Jointly Held Property over $20,000 and two counts Embezzlement Jointly Held Property $1,000 or more but less than $20,000. Mawson was arraigned in the 90th District Court in Emmet County on September 9, 2020 and his bond was set at $150,000 cash surety. His next scheduled court appearance is on October 7, 2020.
