DETROIT, MI – On Tuesday, September 15th, 2020, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Thomas Michel Curry, 38-years-old, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shootings of three people on Helen Street in Detroit.

On June 11th, 2020, at approximately 12:15 a.m., Detroit Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a residence in the 19100 block of Helen Street in Detroit.  Upon arrival, the police officers and firefighters discovered three victims burned beyond recognition.  Medics arrived at the location and pronounced the victims dead at the scene.

The investigation determined that the deceased were males whose ages were 50 years, 34 years and 45 years old.  It is alleged that the defendant arrived at the location and fatally shot the three victims before he set fire to the residence.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 15th, 2020, Curry was charged three counts of First Degree Murder, Second Degree Arson and three counts of Felony Firearm.

Curry Becomes a Barricaded Gunman

On September 15th, 2020 at approximately 2:20 a.m., Redford police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop of the defendant for disregarding a red traffic signal in the area of Five Mile Road and Telegraph Road.  It is alleged that the defendant failed to stop and drove to an address in the 15300 block of Iliad. Upon arrival, he was armed and gained access to the residence, and held two people hostage. The hostages were both eventually released. Detroit police have confirmed that Curry confessed to the three homicides during the stand-off.  This morning DPD confirmed that Curry died from a self-inflicted wound.

Due to the defendant’s death, the homicide case will be dismissed in 36th District Court when the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office (WCPO) obtains the death certificate.
