LAPEER, MI – On Sunday October 4th, 2020, around 3:20 AM, a 67-year-old home owner within the 3200 block of Imlay City Road in Attica was awakened by noises originating from his driveway. The home owner discovered a man stealing his 2004 Chevy Venture Van (unlocked with keys inside the ignition) from the driveway.
At 3:28 AM, a Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputy observed the stolen vehicle traveling east on Imlay City Road through the Lake Pleasant Road intersection in Attica. Marked Sheriff’s cruisers with emergency lights and sirens activated attempted to stop the vehicle for approximately five minutes. The vehicle continued east on Imlay City Road with speeds in the range of 80 MPH to 100 MPH in a 55 MPH zone.
Near the intersection of Cedar and Capac in Imlay City, Imlay City Police Officers were able to successfully deploy spike strips that compromised the stolen vehicle’s tires. The vehicle slowly came to a stop and the driver who was the only occupant of the stolen vehicle and now identified at at Gerald Deering, 24-years-old, of Elkton, was taken into custody without further incident around 3:35 AM. Deering was lodged at the Lapeer County Jail pending formal criminal charges.
On October 5th, the Lapeer County Prosecutor’s Office filed the following formal criminal charges against Gerald Deering.
1) Motor Vehicle- Unlawful Driving Away
2) Police Officer- Fleeing- 4th Degree
On October 5th, 2020, arraignment occurred within the 71-A District Court of Lapeer. Deering was released from the Lapeer County Jail on a $2500 (personal recognizance bond) with next schedule court appearance on 10/16/2020.
