LAPEER, MI – A 72-year-old woman in Lapeer County, who had her driving privileges suspended 8 years ago, was involved in a single vehicle crash that sent her to the hospital, severely damaged a home and the vehicle that she was driving.

On Wednesday October 7th, 2020, at 2:39 PM, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies to an injury traffic crash at the intersection of Attica Road and Summers Road in Attica Township.

A 2000 Ford Focus driven by a 72 year old woman from Imlay City was traveling west on Attica Road. Attica Road stops at Summers Road (T-intersection design). The woman claimed brake failure as the cause for the vehicle to travel across the intersection. The vehicle struck a house on
the west side of the roadway severely damaging the front porch and detaching the gas meter.

The vehicle continued and stopped when it hit an unattached garage. The compromised meter caused a gas leak. Occupants inside the residence were not injured and immediately evacuated. Attica Township Fire Department responded until Consumers Energy arrived.

The driver of the vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to McLaren in Lapeer.

It was discovered that the driver had a suspended driving status according to the Michigan Secretary of State for the past 8 years. Deputies did arrest and release the driver while at hospital with an appearance citation for the criminal charge of driving while license suspended.
