ELMIRA, MI – An investigation by the MSP 7th District Fire Marshal has determined the cause to be an electrical issue that sparked the blaze that destroyed the United States Post Office in Elmira on Tuesday, October 13th, 2020.
At approximately 11:07 p.m. troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gaylord Post and firefighters from the Elmira-Warner and Otsego County Fire Departments responded to a structure fire at the United States Post Office in Elmira. The building was fully engulfed in smoke and flames when they arrived on scene.
The burn pattern at an electrical outlet on an interior wall and other evidence is consistent with that of an electrical fire. The building was secure and there were no signs of entry after closing for business. An MSP accelerant canine was also used during the investigation and there were no signs accelerants in the building. The investigation is now closed.
