DETROIT, MI – Billy Ray Cromer, 33-years-old, has been charged in connection with the assault and torture of his pregnant girlfriend, 30-years-old. Both parties are Detroit residents.
On October 16, 2020, at 8:00 p.m., it is alleged that Billy Cromer went to the home he shared with his girlfriend in the 8830 block of Rosemont in Detroit. Once inside he had a discussion with his girlfriend and violently physically assault her.
It is alleged that he grabbed her by the neck chocking her and repeatedly punched her in the stomach and the head. During the assault the victim attempted to cover her stomach to protect her unborn child. Cromer also made her swallow several unknown prescription medicine pills. He eventually took her to a local hospital for treatment on the same evening.
On October 17th, 2020, the victim’s infant child did not survive the assault. No further details will be released at this time because the homicide investigation into death of the infant is ongoing.
Billy Cromer has been charged with Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm, Torture and Felonious Assault.
Prosecutor Worthy said, “This office has been presented with well over 30,000 domestic violence warrants in just the last five years. I can unequivocally say that alleged facts on this case are among the worst I have seen. Domestic violence is ever present, it is tragic, it is real, it is tremendously disturbing, and it has to be taken much more seriously by society.”
On the afternoon of October 20th, 2020, Billy Ray Cromer was arraigned in 36th District Court and received a cash bond of $750,000. He cannot have contact with victim and must have a GPS tether if he posts bond. The Probable Cause Conference is on November 2, 2020 and the Preliminary Examination is on November 9, 2020.
