GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Grand Rapids Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred on Monday, November 2nd, 2020, in the area of Wealthy Street SE and Diamond Avenue SE.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:45 PM when Dispatch received multiple 911 calls about shots being fired and a person was injured. The victim, a 22-year-old Grand Rapids man, was taken to an area hospital by private transport. Despite all efforts, the victim, Giovani Alevelo, died due to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Wednesday, November 4th, 2020.
The homicide occurred shortly before Police Chief Eric Payne hosted a virtual town hall to present the community with information about gunfire detection technology. “The lack of deference for human life that we are seeing is completely intolerable. Regardless of circumstance, this is not only a crime but a sad testament to the lack of respect for humanity,” said Chief Eric Payne.
On November 4th, 2020, Grand Rapids investigators, with the help of assisting agencies, arrested 25-year-old Jaylin Tyreec-Mizaun Ruffin in connection to the murder of Giovani Alevelo.
Jaylin Ruffin, of Wyoming, has been charged by the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office with a two count felony warrant as a habitual offender. He faces one count of Open Murder and one count of Discharge of a Firearm from a Motor Vehicle Causing Death. If convicted he faces life in prison. He is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. He will be arraigned in 61st District Court.
