NILES, MI – On Sunday November 22nd, 2020, at approximately 3:40pm emergency responders were sent to the E. Main St near Reum Rd, across from the Birchcrest Mobile Home Park for a 2 car injury crash.
Upon arrival, Berrien County Sheriff’s Deputies found 64 year old Octavio Quispe, of Niles, lying on the ground pinned under the passenger door of his vehicle unresponsive. With the help of an MSP Trooper, they were able to lift the truck enough to free the victim. CPR was initiated and eventually the victim regained consciousness. He was transported by SMCAS to South Bend Memorial Hospital for Serious but not life threatening injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle, 61-year old Mathew Borsa from Edwardsburg was transported by Edwardsburg Ambulance to Lakeland Medical Center in Niles where he was treated and released with minor injuries.
Crash investigators found that Quispe was pulling out of the Birchcrest Mobile Home Park in his ford Ranger pickup crossing E Main onto Reum Rd and pulled into the path of a Chevrolet Suburban driven by Borsa. Borsa was pulling a small landscape trailer that had a Honda ATV 4 wheeler. After the collision, Quispe’s vehicle ran off the roadway and came to rest near a small wooded area.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
