PRUDENVILLE, MI – Yesterday morning, Tuesday November 24th, 2020, at approximately 8:00 a.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Houghton Lake Post assisted Denton Township Fire Department (FD) with a large structure fire at Penney’s Lumber on M-18 in Prudenville that had spread to a neighboring trailer park.

While on scene, troopers were requested by Denton Township FD to have DTE shut off a natural gas meter that was burning on the front of Penney’s Lumber and at a burning vacant lot in the neighboring trailer park. DTE only had one crew member on scene to dig up the gas line. Troopers grabbed their shovels and started digging to locate the gas line. A deputy from the Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the dig.

The owner of Penney’s Lumber discovered the fire when he opened for business yesterday morning. Two trailers and a shed were also damaged during the fire. The investigation to determine the cause of the fire continues, however arson is not suspected at this time.
