CHEBOYGAN, MI – Cheboygan County Sheriff Department deputies were dispatched to a snowmobile crash on Tuesday December 15th, 2020, at 9:38pm, on The Trail Road near Blessed Lane.

The investigation revealed Steven Carl Johnson 55-year-old, from Indian River, was driving a 1996 Polaris Indy 500 traveling South bound on The Trail Road when he lost control causing the snowmobile to veer off the roadway and hit a tree.

Steven Johnson died at the scene due to his injuries. His passenger, Tammie Lee Wixson, 53-years-old, from Cheboygan, was seriously injured and transported to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

The crash remains under investigation. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash. Both Johnson and Wixson were wearing helmets.

Assisting at the scene was Cheboygan County Life Support Systems, Tuscarora Township Police, Michigan State Police, Michigan DNR, and the Topinabee Fire Department.

Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont wants to remind snowmobile enthusiasts to be mindful of conditions and to operate in a safe manner. “This was the first snowfall of the year and I know people will be anxious to get on the trails but we want everyone to be safe and operate their sleds in a manner consistent with the conditions.”
