CRAWFORD COUNTY, MI. On Friday, September 11th, 2020, troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Houghton Lake Post were dispatched to Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital for a report of alleged child abuse.
Upon their arrival the troopers were met by a Children’s Protective Services worker who stated a three-week-old infant had been brought to the hospital with multiple injuries. Due to the extent of the injuries the infant was being flown to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.
The mother, 21-year-old Kayla Marie Daykin from Grayling, brought the baby to the hospital for a scheduled appointment. Daykin denied any knowledge of the how the injuries occurred.
The attending physicians at provided troopers with a lengthy health report detailing the numerous injuries to the infant. The attending physician at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital stated the injuries were caused by non-accidental trauma.
A report was submitted to the Crawford County Prosecutor’s Office. An arrest warrant was issued for Kayla Daykin on November 12th, 2020. Troopers arrested Daykin at her residence on November 20th, 2020 and lodged her in the Crawford County Jail. The infant was placed in foster care after being released from the hospital.
Kayla Daykin was arraigned in the 46th District Court in Crawford County on December 15, 2020 for one count First-Degree Child Abuse. Her bond was set at $20,000. Her next scheduled court appearance is on January 5, 2021.
