ARENAC COUNTY, MI – The Michigan State Police (MSP) Houghton Lake Post was contacted on Tuesday January 19th, 2021, to investigate a fraud complaint in Ogemaw County.

The victim was from Merritt and stated her credit card was used to purchase over $1,500 worth of items from the Walmart in West Branch. The suspect was identified as 67-year-old Roger Allan Broadstone from Twining.

Troopers went to his residence to interview him on Wednesday, January 20th. Broadstone refused to come out and speak with troopers. He spoke with them through an open widow and said they would need a search warrant to come inside and speak with him. Troopers obtained a search warrant and made entry.

Broadstone had barricaded himself inside his house. Broadstone resisted troopers and after entry, troopers found that Broadstone set up a booby trap and made other preparations to harm troopers.

Broadstone was arraigned in the 81st District Court in Arenac County on February 1st, 2021. He is now facing five counts Attempted Murder, one count Disarming Police Officer Non-Firearm, one count Attempt to Disarm Police Officer Firearm, four counts Assault/Resisting and Obstructing Police, one count Assault/Resisting and Obstructing Police Causing Injury, one count Placing Offensive Substance with Intent to Injure, one count Arson Preparation to Burn a Dwelling, one count Weapons –Ammunition Possession by Felon, and one count Malicious Destruction of Police Property.

His bond was set at $1,125,000. Troopers were assisted by the Arenac County Sheriff’s Office.
