TROY, MI – Sadly those who are not aware of how to spot a scam find their hard earned money long gone. An Oakland County man learned that lesson the hard way recently.
The victim received an email from PayPal confirming his three-year subscription to Norton Antivirus. When he contacted the phone number provided for technical support, he spoke with “Robin” and “William” who advised him his phone was being hacked. The victim was advised to not contact his friends as their phones would then get hacked as well.
The victim was advised to provide the first page to his 2019 tax return to the suspects to verify his identity. He was then convinced to download apps on his phone which included CashApp, Spot, and Lumi. He was then told in order for them to stop the hackers, the suspects needed him to purchase gift cards from Kroger, CVS Pharmacy, Rite Aid Pharmacy, and Target and provide the suspects the serial numbers to the gift cards.
The victim did such, purchasing approximately $30,000 in gift cards over the six-day period before realizing he was being scammed.
