Jason Sugg was pronounced deceased by a physician at William Beaumont Hospital at 6:15 AM on Sunday February 28th, 2021 after undergoing surgery.

On Saturday, February 27th, 2021, at approximately 2:00p.m., Royal Oak officers responded to the 2700 block of Oliver for a violent domestic dispute involving a father and his adult son.

Officers arrived and determined the 34-year-old son, was intoxicated and assaulted his father. He was also heavily armed, wearing body armor, and had barricaded himself in the house.

Royal Oak officers established phone contact with the suspect and made repeated attempts to convince him to peacefully surrender. During the negotiations, officers could hear multiple gunshots coming from inside the house, with several rounds going through the window. During the lengthy negotiations, the suspect made repeated threats to shoot officers and stated he “rigged” the doors to prevent officers from entering.

Officers set up a perimeter and residents were advised to shelter in place. The Oakland County SWAT team was notified and took over the scene at approximately 4:00p.m. The SWAT team continued negotiations with intermittent contact with the suspect.

After two and half hours with no further contact with the suspect, the SWAT team utilized the SWAT robot and drone to search the house. Communication was reestablished with the suspect after he disabled the drone, however he refused to surrender and donned a gas mask. At approximately 8:30p.m., the suspect appeared near the front of the house and leveled his rifle at deputies and a member of the SWAT team shot him. Deputies rendered first aid and the Royal Oak Fire Department, who were on scene standing by, transported the suspect to William Beaumont Hospital.
