PONTIAC, MI – If there were ever a doubt that hero’s walk among us, the attached video will answer that question very quickly.
An Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy, along with two unnamed men, saved the lives of a Pontiac man and his passenger Thursday, March 4th, 2021, when they were observed in a moving pickup truck, both unconscious after apparently overdosing on heroin.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard today praised the work of Deputy Craig Stout, a 34-year veteran of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, whose quick actions Thursday saved the lives of both men near the border of Auburn Hills and Orion Township.
“The opioid epidemic continues to be a serious problem that affects countless lives, devastates families and impacts communities everywhere,” Bouchard said. “But for the training and quick thinking of Deputy Stout and the assistance of two alert motorists, the families of the men in that truck would be planning two funerals today.”
Stout was on patrol in Orion Township when he was dispatched Thursday at 11:20 a.m. to the area of Dutton and Interpark Drive to investigate the report of a pickup truck moving slowly east of the traffic light at Lapeer Road. Both the driver and the passenger were reported to be unconscious and slumped over inside the truck.
An alert motorist followed the truck and called 911. A second motorist left his own vehicle and was able to run alongside the pickup truck, open the door and stop the vehicle. Stout arrived moments later and saw that both the driver and passenger were unconscious. Stout determined the driver was unconscious but breathing but the passenger – also unconscious – was not breathing and turning blue.
Stout quickly removed the passenger from the truck and administered Naloxone – more commonly known as Narcan – and then began performing CPR. Dashcam video and audio from the deputy recorded the urgency of the rescue.
Thank you Deputy Craig Stout for your beautiful service to the community ! We also thank the two men, who we do not know who you are, but grateful you were in the right place at the right time.
