CHEBOYGAN, MI – On Friday March 12th, 2021, at 7:12 am, the Cheboygan County Jail placed a call to 911 for an ambulance to respond to the jail for an unresponsive male inmate.
The 39-year-old male inmate was considered a low risk inmate of the facility. Correction officer’s attempted life saving measures and those measures continued when EMS arrived. Through coordination with the medical examiner, the inmate was pronounced at the scene.
Sheriff Dale Clarmont immediately initiated an investigation into the cause and manner of the death. At this time it is too early to speculate but there is no indication it is criminal. The name of the deceased is not being released at this time until family is notified. His family is from out of state.
The inmate was serving time on a misdemeanor charge sentenced by the court and was due to be released on March 15th, 2021.
The Inmate was found unresponsive on his bunk sleeping in the dorm area with several other inmates. Interviews are being conducted with those inmates at this time. Video from the cell will be analyzed to assist in the investigation. At the time of discovery corrections staff were being served breakfast and having inmates wake up for their morning meal.
An autopsy has been scheduled for today to assist in the investigation. The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department is awaiting preliminary results of that autopsy.
