EMMET COUNTY, MI. On the morning of October 5th, 2020, a trooper from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gaylord Post was dispatched to a residence on East Levering Road in Bliss Township for a stolen vehicle complaint.
The victim said he woke up in the morning and noticed his vehicle missing from the driveway. He had left his keys and debit card inside the vehicle. The victim learned through his bank that someone attempted use his debit card in Houghton Lake and Lansing, but the person entered the wrong PIN, and the transaction was declined. The vehicle, a 2007 Buick Rendezvous, was entered in the Law Enforcement Information Network as stolen.
The following day it was recovered in Clinton County. It had been involved in a pursuit after a strong-arm robbery in Shiawassee County. The suspect, 43-year-old Luke Daniel Engle, was interviewed by a trooper from the MSP Flint Post while he was lodged in the Shiawassee County Jail.
Troopers from the MSP Houghton Lake Post and MSP Lansing Post assisted in the investigation by obtaining surveillance footage of the suspect attempting to use the victim’s debit card in their respective post areas. A report was submitted to the Emmet County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Charges were authorized and a warrant was signed on January 8, 2021.
Engle was arraigned via video conference in the 90th District Court in Emmet County for one count Motor Vehicle Unlawful Driving Away, one count Illegal Use of Financial Transaction Device, and Habitual Offender Second Notice. Engle is currently incarcerated in the Michigan Department of Corrections Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center. His next scheduled court appearance is on April 7, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.
