DETROIT, MI – Parents of a three year old boy, Anthony Smith, 32-years-old, and Tenisha Christian, 39-years-old, both of Detroit, have been charged in connection with the non-fatal shooting of their son.

On March 9th, 2021, at approximately 2:50 p.m., Detroit police were dispatched to a residence in the 19100 block of Omira Street in Detroit, in response to a gunshot wound of a minor child. Upon arrival, officers located the three-year-old boy with a gunshot wound on their left arm. Medics arrived on scene and transported the child to a local hospital. It is alleged that the child picked up an unsecured handgun in the home and shot himself in the arm.

“This case came to our office on the same day as another child shooting case, as a result of unsafe storage of a weapon, “said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy. Way too many innocent, very young children have easy access to these deadly weapons and this situation usually ends up with a seriously injured or fatally wounded child. I do not understand why the adults cannot safely store their firearms.”

Anthony Smith has been charged with one count of Child Abuse Second Degree, one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm and two counts of Felony Firearm. Tenisha Christian has been charged with one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm and two counts of Felony Firearm.

Both individuals are previously convicted felons based on information from the prosecutors office and from records on MDOC. Neither one should have been in possession of a firearm to begin with.

Tenisha Christian has previous felony convictions for:

  • 2 Counts of Fourth Degree Arson
  • 1 Count of Aggravated Stalking

Anthony Smith and Tenisha Christian were arraigned today and have a Probable Cause Conference date on May 5th, 2021 and their Preliminary Examination is to be determined. Both will be held in 36th District Court in Detroit. Smith received a $10,000 personal bond, and Christian received a $5000 personal bond.
