DETROIT, MI – Darryl Henry Johnson, 24-years-old, of Dalton, Georgia, has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Otis Coil, 29-years-old of Detroit. Johnson is originally from Detroit.
On March 27, 2021, at approximately 11:48 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to the JZ Motel in the 14700 block of Eight Mile Road in Detroit. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, Otis Coil, lying on his back suffering from a gunshot wound on his left side. An officer provided medical attention until the victim was able to be transported to a local hospital for treatment. Mr. Otis later succumbed to his injuries.
It is alleged that a verbal argument between Darryl Johnson and Otis Coil escalated and Johnson fatally shot Mr. Coil. It is further alleged that the suspect pointed his gun at two men and two women, of Detroit, who were inside the motel room at the time of the incident. Darryl Johnson fled on foot after, but shortly after the incident he surrendered himself to Detroit Police Officers with the aid of a relative.
Darryl Johnson has been charged with First Degree Murder, four counts of Felonious Assault, and five counts of Felony Firearm. He was arraigned and remanded to jail today April 2nd, 2021. His Probable Cause Conference is on April 15, 2021, and the Preliminary Examination is on April 22, 2021 in 36th District Court.
