MAYFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI – On Thursday April 1st, 2021, at 2:25 PM, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies to an injury traffic crash upon Haines Road east of Roods Lake in Lapeer (Lapeer County’s Mayfield Township). It was reported that a pickup truck left the roadway striking a tree. Two occupants were non-responsive inside of the vehicle.

A 2003 Dodge pickup truck, driven by a 40-year-old man from Lapeer, was traveling east on Haines Road. Evidence at the scene supports the vehicle went off the right (south) side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a mailbox and traveled along the shoulder of the roadway a distance. The driver overcorrected when attempting to get the vehicle back into the travel portion of the roadway.

The vehicle rotated as it traveled across both the east and west lanes of Haines Road. The vehicle was sideways when it left the north side of the roadway subsequently slamming into a tree. The tree impacted into the vehicle’s passenger side several feet.

Lapeer City Fire and Rescue were able to extricate the 40-year-old driver. The driver was transported to McLaren in Lapeer. The driver remains hospitalized at McLaren in Lapeer and listed in stable condition. The passenger, 37-year-old Rick Trott from North Branch, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The roadway was closed for 3 hours for rescue and investigative purposes. Reconstruction and toxicology are pending to determine if either speed (55 MPH speed limit) or alcohol are contributing factors.

Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted at the scene by Lapeer City Fire and Rescue, Lapeer County EMS Ambulance Service, Medstar Ambulance Service, Lapeer County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Division, Michigan State Police (Lapeer Post), Department of Natural Resource (DNR), and Byers Wrecker Service in Lapeer.

This traffic crash remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information is requested to contact Detective Sgt. Jason Parks at jparks@lapeercounty.org or 810-656-1015.
