HUBBELL, MI – At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Monday, April 12th, 2021, troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Calumet Post, along with a deputy from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, were dispatched to a report of shots fired at a residence in Hubbell.
Hubbell is located in the upper peninsula near Houghton.
Upon arriving, officers encountered a 28-year-old woman who was outside the residence, armed with a gun. The officers gave repeated verbal commands to the subject to put the firearm down, but she refused and instead attempted to re-enter the occupied home with the weapon.
Fearing for the safety of an elderly person inside the residence, the officers fired their weapons, striking the woman. After the shooting, the officers administered first aid until EMS arrived. She was transported to a local hospital by EMS.
Detectives from the MSP Seventh District Investigative Response Team are conducting a full investigation into the shooting. The troopers who were involved have been placed on administrative leave, per department protocol, while the investigation is underway.
When complete, the investigation will be forwarded to the Houghton County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
