LAPEER, MI – On Tuesday April 13th, 2021, at 12:04 PM, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer Township Police Officers and Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies to an injury traffic crash at the intersection of Peppermill and Wilder Road in Lapeer.

23 year old Stephen Collins-Krug from Metamora was the driver and lone occupant of a 2017 Chev Malibu. Collins-Krug was traveling west on Peppermill Road and made a complete stop at the posted stop sign for the Wilder Road intersection. Collins-Krug entered the intersection into the path of a 2021 Ford F-150 pickup truck traveling north on Wilder Road. The collision is considered broadside.

Both vehicles departed the northwest corner of the intersection before coming to rest. Collins-Krug was pronounced on scene and required extrication from the vehicle by Lapeer City Fire and Rescue. The northbound 2021 Ford pickup was driven by a 51 year old male from Lapeer with a 52 year old male (Lapeer) as a passenger. Occupants of the Ford pickup truck were not injured and declined medical attention.

This is a joint investigation by Officers with Lapeer Township Police Department and Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies. Agencies were assisted at the scene by Lapeer City Fire and Rescue, Medstar EMS, Lapeer County EMS, Michigan State Police (Lapeer Post), Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.

The intersection was closed for approximately 2 hours for rescue and investigative purposes. The preliminary investigation supports that neither excessive speed nor alcohol are contributing factors. This crash remain under investigation by Lapeer Township Police and Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Obituary for Stephen Vern Collins – Krug

Stephen V. Krug, age 23, of Metamora, formerly of Bad Axe, passed away on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born on December 12, 1997 in Bad Axe, son of Robert and Michele (Collins) Krug.

Stephen graduated from Bad Axe High School in 2016, he was currently enrolled at Oakland Community College to become a Physicians Assistant, he was a member of the Attica Township Fire Department. He was an avid hunter, loved hanging out with is many family and friends, watching scary movies with his sisters and cousins. He was known by all for his smile, generosity and endless laughter. So many have said he was the life of the party.

Stephen is survived by his parents: Robert and Michele Krug of Bad Axe. Siblings: Ashleigh (Andrew Levaine) Krug and his unborn Niece or Nephew due in September and Haylee Krug of Bad Axe, Grandparents: Gary & Patricia Krug of Bad Axe, Mary Lou Collins of Imlay City, Aunts and Uncles: Brian Krug of Grenora ND, Tawna Krug and Kevin Glover of Morristown, TN, Peggy Collins of Dryden, Barbara Collins of Imlay City and Richard Guzowski of Metamora. God-Parents: Claude and Kim Ockert. Numerous Cousins, Great Aunts and Great Uncles. He is also survived by his Attica Twp. Fire Family and numerous friends from Huron County, Iosco County and Lapeer County.

He was preceded in death by his Papa, James W. Collins and his Aunt Anna M. Collins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at 11 am at St. Hubert Parish – Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Officiating will be Fr. T.J. Fleming. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 19, 2021 from 4 – 8 pm at the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe or Tuesday at the church from 10 am until the service time at 11 am. A service conducted by the Attica Township Fire Department will be held on Monday at 7 pm at the funeral home.
