MANISTEE, MI – On Sunday, February 16th, 2020 troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Cadillac Post were called to the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee to investigate a woman who had allegedly passed contraband to an inmate during visitation.
The woman, identified as 46-year-old Melanie Ann Turo from Sunfield, was visiting a family member in the correctional facility when she was observed passing an item to the inmate. When confronted by a correction officer, the inmate ran down the hall and digested the item. Turo was detained and interviewed by troopers. Turo denied passing anything to the inmate. Surveillance footage was reviewed, and a search warrant was conducted at the motel Turo was staying at. Troopers seized numerous bags of balloons, small balloons packed with suspected methamphetamine, cash, cell phones, SIM cards, cash, and a record book containing inmate information.
A report was turned over to the Manistee County Prosecutor’s Office. In December 2020, an arrest warrant was authorized for Turo. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to locate her. She was arrested on April 19, 2021 during a traffic stop by a trooper from the MSP Wayland Post. She was turned over to troopers from the MSP Cadillac Post and lodged in the Manistee County Jail.
Turo was arraigned yesterday in the 85th District Court in Manistee County for one count Possession Methamphetamine and one count Possession Analogues. Her bond was set at $5,000 10%. Turo’s next scheduled court appearance is on May 11, 2021 at 1:30 p.m.
