WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, MI – On Thursday April 29th, 2021, at approximately 11:02 pm, Macomb County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the area of Jim Riehl’s Friendly Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram of Romeo located at 64600 Van Dyke on a report of reckless driving of vehicles.
As the first Deputy arrived, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee (red) exited the lot at a high rate of speed. The vehicle went Northbound on Van Dyke, Eastbound on 30 Mile and eventually Southbound on the M-53 bypass. The Jeep was traveling at a high rate of speed and the pursuit was terminated at M-53 and 26 Mile. Other responding Deputies observed 3 other vehicles exit and flee in different directions. Those vehicles were a 2018 Dodge Challenger (green), 2018 Dodge Challenger (green), and a 2021 Dodge Charger (white).
Deputies were informed that the red Jeep crashed in Sterling Heights. A Macomb County Sheriff’s Deputy was responding to the crash via Mound Rd. when he saw the 2021 Dodge Charger. He followed the vehicle and notified Warren Police. Warren Police along with the Sheriff’s Deputy initiated a traffic stop and the vehicle fled. The Charger entered I-696 and went Eastbound, the pursuit was terminated at I-94.
During the course of the investigation, the green Dodge Challenger was located unoccupied on Southbound M-53 south of 23 Mile. A K-9 track was conducted by Shelby Township Police with negative results.
Macomb Sheriff Deputies were notified that the red Jeep crashed and caused a fatality at the intersection of 15 mile and Van Dyke.
Deputies spoke with employees of the dealership and obtained inside video surveillance footage. They saw 4 individuals break into the dealership and eventually enter the four listed vehicles. Three vehicles leave at one time and the 4th leaves the garage 5 minutes later.
The vehicles then pull into the Kroger parking lot just North of the dealership and began to do “doughnuts.” As the first responding Deputy arrives, the vehicles flee the lot.
