GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, MI – On Tuesday May 4th, 2021, at approximately 7:40 a.m., in the Village of Kingsley at the Bay Area Transportation Authority (BATA) bus stop in the Northland Foods Grocery Store parking lot a man boarded the BATA bus and attempted to take the fire extinguisher out of its holder.

The bus driver, fearing the man was going to strike him or spray him with the fire extinguisher, radioed for help and exited the bus. The man then stole the bus and attempted to turn east bound on M-113 and was struck by a west bound passenger car driven by a 29-year-old Manton woman.

There were no passengers on the BATA bus at the time of the crash. The Manton woman suffered apparent minor injuries and is seeking her own medical treatment. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Kyle Stephan Willobee, was uninjured and lodged in the Grand Traverse County Jail.

Kyle Willobee was arraigned today in the 86th District Court in Grand Traverse County on one count Carjacking, one count Assault With A Dangerous Weapon, one count Reckless Driving, and Habitual Offender Third Offense. His bond was set at $25,000 cash surety.
