GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A woman was killed by a driver that authorities believe had been drinking when he drove the wrong way on northbound US-131 early this morning causing a head-on crash.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police Grand Rapids Post responded to a wrong way driver that caused a two-vehicle head-on crash at approximately 2:40AM on Friday, May 21st, 2021, on northbound US-131 near Ann St.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1999 Toyota 4Runner driven by a twenty-one-year-old man from Rockford, MI was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of travel on US-131 and collided head on with a 2020 Buick Encore that was traveling southbound and driven by a fifty-nine-year-old woman from Wyoming, MI. The fifty-nine-year-old woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The twenty-one-year-old driver of the 4Runner was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by the MSP Grand Rapids Post. Names are not being released at this time. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
Troopers were assisted on scene by the Grand Rapids Police Department, Grand Rapids Fire Department AMR, and Kent County Road Commission.
