ROCHESTER HILLS, MI – On Thursday May 27th, 2021, at 8:06 a.m., in the City of Rochester Hills, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Officer Reconstruction Unit assisted Deputies at the intersection of Dequindre Road and Hamlin Road with the investigation of a serious injury traffic crash that involved 11 victims in a 4 vehicles. 

A 35-year-old resident of Troy was driving a 2014 Toyota Sienna northbound on Dequindre Road when he drove through the intersection of Hamlin Road disregarding a red traffic light indicated for the intersection. A 40-year-old resident of Shelby Township was driving a 2021 Ford Expedition westbound on Hamlin Road through the intersection of Dequindre Road, where a green traffic light was indicated for him.  The front of the Ford collided into the side of the Toyota.

As a result of the collision with the Ford, the Toyota then collided with a 2021 Jeep Cherokee that was stopped for the red traffic light, facing south, on Dequindre Road. The Jeep was driven by an 84-year-old resident of Rochester.

As a result of the collision with the Toyota, the Jeep was propelled into the side of a Peterbilt tractor-trailer combination that was stopped beside it at the intersection.  The Peterbilt was being driven by a 58-year-old resident of Kitchener, Ontario.

The drivers of the four vehicles were all wearing seatbelts. The driver of the Toyota sustained minor injuries and was not hospitalized. There were three passengers in the Toyota. A 2-year-old resident of Troy was seated in the second row and was restrained properly. That passenger was transported to Beaumont Hospital in Troy by the Rochester Hills Fire Department with minor injuries. A 3-year-old resident of Troy was seated in the third row. It is unknown whether that passenger was restrained properly. That passenger was transported to Beaumont Hospital in Troy by the Rochester Hills Fire Department with minor injuries. A 5-year-old resident of Troy was seated in the third row and was not restrained properly. That passenger was transported to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak by the Rochester Hills Fire Department with serious injuries.

The driver of the Ford was not injured. There were three passengers in the Ford, none of whom were hospitalized. A 10-year-old resident of Shelby Township was seated in the second row, was using a seatbelt and was uninjured. A 12-year-old resident of Shelby Township was wearing a seatbelt in the front passenger seat and was not injured. A 13-year-old resident of Shelby Township had been seated in the second row and wearing a seatbelt and sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Jeep was not injured and or transported to a hospital. An 83-year-old resident of Rochester was seated in the front passenger seat of the Jeep and was using a seatbelt. That passenger was transported to Beaumont Hospital in Troy by the Rochester Hills Fire Department with minor injuries.

The driver of the Peterbilt was uninjured and was not transported to a hospital. There were no passengers in the Peterbilt.

Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to have been a factor in this crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
