NORTH BRANCH, MI – On Memorial Day, Monday May 31st, 2021, at 9:36 PM, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies and Michigan State Police Troopers to a missing two year old in the 4000 block of Fish Lake Road in North Branch.

It was determined that a 31 year old father was supervising his 2 year old autistic son while the 26 year old mother was at work. The father awoke after falling to sleep for a period of time and discovered an open unlocked door. The father further discovered his two year old son missing. The child was last known to be wearing only a diaper and no other clothing attire.

The family dog normally accompanied the child everywhere. The dog was on the porch of the family home with wet fur. There is a pond on the property that had impressions visible from the dog upon the shore line. Canine teams from the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police immediately responded and started a track. The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team started a search of the pond within the back yard of the family home. Lapeer County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue started a search of the rural woods and fields surrounding the residence.

Michigan State Police Aviation Division was requested to join this search and rescue. MSP Aviation arrived around 11:49 PM and started near the house utilizing heat detection. At 11:54 PM, after approximately 5 minutes, MSP located an unidentified heat source within a tree line associated to a farm field approximately a quarter mile directly east of the residence. Deputies responded to the directed area and located the child unharmed around 12:00 AM.

This was a joint search and rescue by Michigan State Police and Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies. MSP Aviation participation played a significant role in this successful conclusion.

This case remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office along with Michigan Department of Health and Human Services – Child Protective Services.
