HURON COUNTY, MI – On Wednesday June 23rd, 2021, at approximately 11:23 a.m., the Michigan State Police Caro Post responded to a traffic crash which occurred at the intersection of N Van Dyke Rd and Barrie Rd in Colfax Twp.
The crash involved a bicyclist, a 52-year-old man from Bad Axe, and a vehicle hauling a utility trailer. The vehicle stopped for a stop sign and then began its travel southbound, crossing at the intersection of N Van Dyke Rd and Barrie Rd. The bicyclist was traveling eastbound, within the eastside shoulder of the roadway, on N Van Dyke Rd when he struck the utility trailer of the vehicle.
Upon impact, the bicyclist became lodged underneath the trailer for some distance before becoming dislodged. The bicyclist was pronounced deceased on scene from his injuries.
The vehicle left the scene of the crash but was later located. The driver of the vehicle, a 38-year-old man from Ruth, was unaware the crash had occurred.
Troopers were assisted by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office, Bad Axe Police and Fire Department, Bad Axe DPW, and Central Huron EMS.
