AUBURN HILLS, MI – Lavaren Gaddis, a 32-year-old man from Rochester Hills, has been charged and arraigned for the murder of Deloris Avant, a 36-year-old resident of Auburn Hills.
Gaddis has been charged with Homicide – Open Murder, a felony offense, which carries a maximum possible penalty of life in prison and Possession of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, which is a felony offense, carrying a maximum possible penalty of two years in prison. Gaddis was arraigned today, July 9th, 2021, in front of Magistrate Soma at the 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills. Bond was denied and Gaddis will remain in custody at the Oakland County Jail pending court proceedings. I preliminary exam conference has been set for July 19th, 2021, at 1:15 pm in front of Judge Carniak.
On Tuesday, July 6th, 2021, at 4:24 am, personnel from the Auburn Hills Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to an apartment in the 3500 block of Fountain Circle for a person that had been shot. Upon arrival, personnel located Deloris Avant, a resident of the apartment, with a single gun shot wound to her upper body. Ms. Avant was unresponsive and was immediately transported to the hospital by Auburn Hills Fire personnel. She later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
It is alleged that Gaddis shot Avant during a domestic dispute inside a bedroom in the apartment. The victim’s 13-year-old son was inside the apartment sleeping at the time of the murder and was not injured during the incident.This incident was contained to the apartment and did not involve any other people in the apartment complex. There were no other reported injuries at the scene.
