ST. JOSEPH, MI - Former Michigan Senator Harry Gast has died at the age of 94 in his home in St. Joseph, Michigan.\r\nGast was a Republican who served for 32 years and led the state Senate's budget committee for 18 years.\r\nGov. Rick Snyder issued the following statement after the passing of former state Sen. Harry Gast:\r\n\u201cThe passing of St. Joseph legislator and highly respected former Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Harry Gast should remind all of us of the value of public service.\u00a0Sen. Gast dedicated a large part of his life to serving Michigan residents in many elected posts, including as a township official, state representative and state senator. Named as Legislator of the Year by organizations as diverse as the Michigan United Conservation Clubs, the Chiefs of Police and the Michigan Townships Association, he became known for his famous no-nonsense attitude, but ready smile and hearty laugh. He was first and foremost a family man and a very proud farmer.\u00a0Harry was a fixture in Lansing for over 30 years and was a true problem-solver.\r\n\u201cSue and I extend our condolences to Jean Gast, the couple\u2019s three children and\u00a0all of their family and friends.\u201d\r\nAttorney General Schuette today issued the following statement on the passing of former Senator Harry Gast:\r\n"Cynthia and I are saddened to hear of the death of Sen.
