TRAVERSE CITY, MI - On October 16, 2014 around noon, an East Bay Township resident called to report that they saw a young teen walking through the Westbriar and Soutbriar area trying to get into cars. She saw him open one vehicle and briefly enter it. As deputies were responding, she gave a description of the youth and a direction he was last seen walking.\u00a0\u00a0 \r\nDeputies arrived and located the teen a short distance away who matched the description given. Another deputy made contact with the owner of the vehicle that had been opened. The owner discovered he was missing cigarettes and some loose change.\r\nThe teen was in possession of loose change and cigarettes matching the same brand and quantity. He said he was trying to enter several cars, but most of them were locked. He also disclosed that he took a lighter from the vehicle.\r\nThe teen, a seventeen year old Traverse City male, was lodged at the Grand Traverse County Jail for one count of Larceny from Auto. A report will be sent to the Prosecutor\u2019s Office requesting charges. No other vehicle owners have reported missing items at this time.\r\nThe Grand Traverse Sheriff\u2019s Office urges everyone not to keep valuable items in their vehicles and to always lock your cars and homes.
