CLARKSTON, MI - For those of us who came of age in the 70's and 80's listening to Foreigner and now that band teaming up with Kid Rock on his “First Kiss Cheap Date” tour is one concert not to be missed - if you can still score tickets.
On August 8th, 2015, friends had me join them for this concert on my 53rd birthday. Though this was not the first time going to a Kid Rock concert, it certainly had to be the best. DTE Energy Music Theatre, formerly Pine Knob, was sold out.
Kid Rock is on a quest that has him selling out DTE for 10 shows. If he is able to complete this leg of his tour, he will break Bob Seger's 8 show run. He is rocking his way into the history books.
The true highlight of the night though was the band Foreigner. Electric, strong and undeniably entertaining with the catalog of music that everyone knew the words to. They took the stage after the Packway Handle Band, a bluegrass quintet, opened the night. Though Packway was not overly impressive, they did redeem themselves when they joined Kid Rock on stage later in the concert. It was interesting to see the huge difference in a band entertaining the crowd when the lead singer is changed. That person being Kid Rock.
Foreigner front man Kelly Hansen took us through such hits as "Double Vision", "Urgent" and "Jukebox Hero". It honestly was a true wow moment in life. Mainly because I had not been told or looked to see who would be sharing the stage with Kid Rock before the concert. So it really was a surprise and a great time.
Kid Rock took the stage and from that moment on it was loud and energetic. He brought out such hits as "Cowboy", "Pictured" and "Bawitdaba", "All Summer Long" along with his new material from his latest album.
Though he has his place in rock history and is extremely controversial, Kid Rock brought to the stage Ted Nugent to sing with him "Cat Scratch Fever". It was definitely not a favorite moment in the night.
All in all it was a great time. Thank you to Kelcey and Paul for a wonderful birthday. Thank you for spending the day with me and thinking that much of me.
